Born in Italy near Udine, Maddalena Del Gobbo began her extraordinary musical education at a very early age. At the age of four she received piano and ballet lessons, at eight she began to play the cello and a little later she added singing. Her great talent led her to the conservatory in Vienna at the age of 13.
Her most important encounter to date, however, came a few years later when she walked into a record store where a viola da gamba CD was on sale. She was immediately captivated by the magical sound of this instrument. Although Maddalena Del Gobbo graduated with a master’s degree in cello with honors, her heart belongs to the viola da gamba. With the latter, Maddalena Del Gobbo has made appearances at renowned festivals and played as part of the “Musica Antiqua” concert cycle in the Brahms Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, in the “U21” concert series of BR-Klassik or the “Yellow Lounge” of Deutsche Grammophon.
In 2014 Maddalena Del Gobbo’s debut CD “Viola d’Emozione” was released by Archiv Produktion. The second CD, “Henriette, the Princess of the Viol,” was released by Deutsche Grammophon in fall 2016. This makes her the first gambist to release a solo CD on Deutsche Grammophon.
Maddalena Del Gobbo plays a viola da gamba by Johann Seelos from 1691, on loan from the Orpheon Foundation.
